Fusion Maia Resort in Da Nang voted best spa in Asia DA NaNG (VNS)-- The Fusion Maia Resort, located in central coastal Da Nang City, has been voted as Asia's Best Luxury Boutique Spa. The World Luxury Spa Awards annually recognise spas around the globe that set standards in quality, innovation and service. Located on Ngu Hanh Son District's Bac My An Beach, Fusion Maia Resort was voted one of Viet Nam's best luxury hotels in 2011 by America's Conde Nast Traveller magazine. The Maia Spa is the highlight of the resort and the largest spa in Viet Nam. Its therapies are based on the resort's seven-principle guideline on how to achieve a balanced lifestyle. The awards also voted Le Spa at La Residence Hotel in Hue City as Viet Nam's Best Luxury Boutique Spa, and Six Senses Con Dao Spa in Vung Tau City as Viet Nam's Best Luxury Resort Spa. VNS 02 de Rose Spa at Mvenpick Marrakech voted Africa's best The de Rose Spa at Mvenpick Hotel Mansour Eddahbi Marrakech has been announced as "Best Luxury Hotel Spa in Africa" and "Best Luxury Wellness Spa in Morocco". The distinctions were awarded by the jury of the World Luxury Spa Awards 2017 at a gala ceremony in Hanoi, Vietnam. The World Luxury Spa Awards recognise the best luxury spas around the world for their high levels of service, expertise and excellence, as acknowledged by votes from the public and industry professionals. de Rose refers to the rosewater perfume preferred by Moroccan nobility during the 16th century Saadian dynasty. Among the five-star highlights in this two-floor wellness destination are soft steam showers, a jacuzzi, sauna, outdoor pool and seven treatment rooms, as well as a hammam complex for men and women. A nail studio with Semilac products and LOreal hair salon complement the spa, which benefits from the expertise and know-how of Cinq Mondes. Authentic Moroccan products such as argan oil, beldi black soap and rhassoul mud are also used. "As a hotel team, we are delighted about these distinguished awards. I believe the way in which our de Rose Spa combines fragrance, design, history, service and skill is what makes it such an unforgettable venue for spa experiences," said Peter Schnenberger, general manager of Mvenpick Hotel Mansour Eddahbi & Palais des Congrs Marrakech. The hotel and spa reopened in October 2016 after three years of renovation by Parisian architecture and design firm MHNA Studio. It is linked to the Palais des Congrs Marrakech, which is also managed by Mvenpick Hotels & Resorts. - TradeArabia News Service 03 Pristine beaches, world-class surfing and a treetop spa: Inside the Indonesian island retreat voted the best hotel in the world A luxury island resort in Indonesia has been ranked the best hotel in the world by Travel + Leisure in its annual World's Best Awards. Nihiwatu, a former surf lodge on the little-known island of Sumba, boasts 28 villas, all with private plunge pools, as well as an all-day treetop spa, an equestrian centre, and a beach restaurant serving healthy bush-cooked cuisine. For rates of up to 9,300 ($12,000) per night at high-season, guests can enjoy sunset horse-riding, world-class surfing on its famous 'Occy's Left' wave, local exploration of hidden waterfalls, and scenic views of farmed rice paddies. Sumba island itself is twice the size of Bali but almost entirely preserved from urban development, and Nihiwatu won particular praise in the competition for its 'strong engagement with the local community, and a feather-light footprint on the ecology of Sumba'. Nihiwatu was first established in 1988 by an American surfer and his German wife as a ten-room surf retreat, but was gradually developed into a more luxury establishment before being bought in 2012 by U.S. entrepreneur Chris Burch. 'Hospitality-centric luxury has changed,' Mr Burch announced. 'It is more than just the finer touches. It has evolved to a custom itinerary, a personal journey, unexpected experiences, and a curiosity for the unknown.' These pictures show how his philosophy is working a treat. Welcome to Nihiwatu - the luxury Indonesian island resort ranked best hotel in the world in Travel + Leisure's annual World's Best Awards Guests at Nihiwatu are surrounded by nature at its most beautiful and decor at its most restfully opulent Nestled on Sumba island overlooking the turquoise Indian ocean, Nihiwatu (pictured) boats lush vegetation and rolling yellow sands The lavish beach resort commands up to 9,300 a night for an estate at high season, or 500 a night for 2-bedroom villa in low season The heavenly all-day spa offers a full range of treatments including facials, massages and manicures, all to the tune of the ocean waves A private dining experience with a glorious view, serving up healthy bush-cooked cuisine and strewn with flowers, reeds and candles Kanatar Sumba House, one of the residences complete with a private pool, a sunbathing deck, and a spacious outside entertainment area The whole complex overlooks an idyllic 2.5 km private beach (pictured), set within 567 acres of carefully protected natural reserve The decor comprises polished hardwood floors, fringe-trimmed roofs and four poster beds shrouded in elegant mosquito netting The Bao Boathouse - from where guests can enjoy world-class surfing on Sumba's famous 'Occy's Left' wave - serves snacks and drinks The spectacular Cliffside Bale villa, elevated above the sea, provides a little nook for daytime sun gazing or night-time star spotting Nihiwatu was first established in 1988 by an American surfer and his German wife as a ten-room surf retreat. Pictured - the Cliffside villa It was gradually developed and upgraded, and then purchased in 2012 by U.S. entrepreneur Chris Burch. Pictured - the Marangga pool The rustic Kasambi Estate (pictured) has a prime position for surf enthusists who want to keep a close eye on the movements of the waves The sprawling family villa, decorated with hues of cream and yellow, has floor-to-ceiling glass panels which look out to the trees and sand Owner Chris Burch says: 'Hospitality-centric luxury has changed. It is more than just the finer touches'. Pictured, one of the infinity pools Burch added: 'It has evolved to a custom itinerary, a personal journey, unexpected experiences, and a curiosity for the unknown' Sumba island is twice the size of tourist-favourite Bali and a 50-minute plane journey away, but is considerably less busy in comparison
Sing or clam up: What's the best bet for Paul Manafort as he rots in jail? Paul Manafort arrives for Friday's hearing in U.S. District Court in Washington. (Mandel Ngan/AFP/Getty Images) If youre Paul Manafort, and a judge has just thrown you into jail for alleged witness tampering, and you have already been indicted on several counts of money laundering, fraud and tax evasion, theres an awful lot of pressure on you to make your prosecutors happy. Clearly theyre not messing around anymore and are perfectly willing to destroy your life if you dont give them what they want: testimony about what really happened during the Trump campaign, when you were campaign chairman. Given the possibility of spending your life in prison if youre convicted on all charges, it would not be at all stupid to start thinking, as you waste away in your cell, about how you can save yourself, even if it means throwing some old buddies and colleagues under the bus. In any case, thats what special counsel Robert S. Mueller III hopes youre thinking. He hopes that, like many jailed witnesses before you, youre thinking about a negotiated plea agreement and a reduced sentence in return for an offer to cooperate. Read More World Cup 2026: United States, Canada and Mexico Win Bid to Be Host It was a very emotional moment for everyone, Cordeiro said later, recalling the devastation he felt in 2010 when the United States failed to secure the right to stage the 2022 World Cup, losing to Qatar in a much-criticized voting process. The 2026 tournament will be one of firsts. It will be the first time the World Cup is hosted by three countries, the first time it has a 48-team format (up from 32 teams), and Wednesdays vote was the first of its kind to be decided by FIFAs entire membership. Of the tournaments 80 matches, 10 will be in Canada, 10 in Mexico and 60 in the United States including every match from the quarterfinals to the final. The last time the mens World Cup was held in North America was when the United States hosted it in 1994. It was held in Mexico in 1970 and 1986, and Canada has never hosted. It was unclear Wednesday whether all three nations would be granted automatic bids into the field, as is customary for the host nation; FIFA said there had been no final decision on the matter. Leaders of the North American bid had been on the road since April, visiting voting nations around the globe. As the race entered its final stages, several top officials and bid staff members relocated to London, deeming it a better base camp from which to visit far-flung federations in Europe, Asia, the Middle East and southern Africa. At one point two weeks ago, Cordeiro and his staff traveled from Europe to Bangkok for a single meeting, returning the next day. The extensive lobbying bid leaders estimated they had met 150 of FIFAs 211 federation presidents in person paid off. The North Americans rode to victory on a wave of support from the Americas, Europe and Asia, plus a few votes poached from Africa, whose regional soccer president, Ahmed Ahmed, issued a bombastic plea to his members on Tuesday urging them to vote for Morocco as a symbol of African unity. From a few days ago, we always had a clear path to victory, Cordeiro said. Still, even he could not have anticipated some of the support that the North Americans ended up receiving, notably a vote from Russia. After the months of meetings and arm-twisting, the hundreds of airline flights and the weeks in ever-changing hotels, a campaign that began last August when Morocco jumped into the race (on the final day countries could do so), ended in an instant: with a 15-second note and a brief announcement by the FIFA president, Gianni Infantino, that the combined bid had prevailed. Moments later, and just a few hours after Russias president, Vladimir V. Putin, had welcomed the world to celebrate the 2018 World Cup, the North American soccer leaders took to the same stage to tell the world to celebrate with them in 2026. The victory spared U.S. Soccer a second stunning defeat in less than a year; the United States mens team is missing the World Cup this summer, its first absence since 1986. The American federation spent more than $6 million out of a combined budget of about $8 million to bring the World Cup back to North America, the culmination of an idea set in motion in a restaurant in Vancouver, British Columbia, seven years ago, according to Victor Montagliani, the head of Concacaf, the regions governing body for soccer. Heres how each soccer federation in FIFA voted on Wednesday. As delegates surged to congratulate the winners on Wednesday, Montagliani took a deep breath to consider the journey that had secured soccers biggest prize. He said he had conceived the plan while he was head of Canadian soccer, and managed to persuade Sunil Gulati, then the U.S. soccer president, to join in a potential joint offer after Canada staged a successful Womens World Cup in 2015. Gulati, who was replaced by Cordeiro in February after declining to run for re-election, first secured the support of the chairman of the influential Mexican television channel Televisa, Emilio Azcrraga, and finally brought the Mexican soccer federation on board. I was so nervous sitting up there because you dont have control over anything, said Montagliani, who was seated on a raised dais with FIFAs senior membership as the decision was announced Wednesday. Its like your little baby. The North Americans had offered FIFAs member associations a ready-made World Cup; the 23 stadiums they suggested are all built, as is most of the infrastructure the expanded 48-team tournament will need: training sites, hotels, airports, rail lines. And, like Morocco, the North Americans also had the full support of their governments. The nations so-called United Bid was a rare topic on which the presidents of the three countries found common cause, and the United States government, including President Trump, had mounted a stealthy shadow campaign to try to win over FIFA and its member federations. The North American bids signature selling point, however, was delivered in a language FIFA members long have understood: revenue. The North Americans promised FIFA an $11 billion profit a staggering sum that could mean tens of millions of dollars in development funds for each national association. Morocco, which pledged a profit less than half as large as its rivals, criticized the focus on money over soccer until the bitter end. The United Bid is proposing an offer that is mainly a business proposal for football, one Moroccan official, Moncef Belkhayat, said Monday. Their offer is based on dollars, on profit, while Morocco is offering an offer that is based on passion for football. After the defeat, African officials gathered around their president, Ahmed, as he scanned the list of countries that did not vote for Morocco. We are hurting, said Daniel Amokachi, a Nigerian former soccer player who had worked as an ambassador for the Moroccan bid. You look at the countries from your continent that didnt vote and you have blood Arab countries that supported a different nation. Thats where it hurts more. Yet there were serious concerns about Moroccos candidacy from the beginning, notably how the North African nation could cope with the massive undertaking of hosting the first 48-team World Cup. It would have needed to spend billions of dollars to build nine stadiums and to significantly renovate five others, and do it all in eight years four fewer than the 12 FIFA gave to Qatar, which still has not finished the job of getting ready for the 2022 World Cup. Then there were the hotels, the highways, the rail links and the facilities to host a tournament set to bring more than 1,100 players and millions of fans to North Africa; all would have needed to be built, at a cost of billions more. Morocco, which has now lost five efforts to stage the tournament, vowed to press ahead and build the projects it presented to voters. We managed this bid with a sporting spirit and we will continue our path in the same vein, said Moulay Hafid Elalamy, its millionaire bid chairman. The final result was far more emphatic than it may have appeared in the last-gasp votes that played into the early hours of Wednesday morning. At one point, both bid teams arrived at the hotel housing Asian delegates shortly before 1 a.m., as rumors began to spread that the Moroccans might have gained some ground. The rumors were fueled by an announcement late Tuesday by the Netherlands soccer federation that it would back Morocco, contrary to what officials had told the North Americans as recently as last week. The victory will also be celebrated privately by FIFAs leadership, which had given indications it preferred the surety and the billions to come by taking the tournament back to North America. A technical report, which Infantino, FIFAs president, repeatedly told voters to read, scored the winning bid far higher than Moroccos offer, which FIFA inspectors said had several high risk factors. Infantinos No. 2, Fatma Samoura, issued the same reminder just before voting began. Infantino, who announced his plans to stand for a second term at an election next year, has been on a drive to raise the funds he needs to make good on promises to drastically increase the amount of funding he can deliver to national soccer federations, the only voting constituency in the presidential election. Cordeiro said the Americans also spoke to members about how a World Cup hosted by the North Americans would lead to a cash windfall for everyone. In Scandinavia last month, he said each federation could get as much as an extra $50 million should the 2026 World Cup meet its $11 billion profit target. Let that sink in, he told them. By Wednesday, it was clear the message had been heard loud and clear. Correction: June 13, 2018 A news alert about the vote to host the tournament gave an incorrect distinction to the winner. It was the first time a joint bid from three countries was selected; it was not the first time any joint bid was selected. Continue reading the main story Putin hoped his World Cup bid would improve relations with the West. Theyve suffered instead. Vladimir Putin exulted in Zurich during a news conference organized after officials from FIFA, soccers international governing body, had announced his country had won the bidding to host the World Cup in 2018. It was December 2010. Though the highly anticipated vote had been trailed by accusations of corruption, the high-profile arrests of the organizations officials in predawn raids, which cast a harsh light on the unsavory side of international soccer, were still five years in the future. And Putin that day was in a celebratory mood as he took questions from international reporters, sharing stories about his childhood and talking about his hopes for what the major tournament would mean for Russia in the eyes of the world. First of all, we need to show that Russia is an open country, that it is open to the whole world, he said. People will understand what Russia is when they come here. There are still a lot of stereotypes left over from the past. But the more contacts we establish, the faster these stereotypes will dissipate. The World Cup kicked off Thursday with a resounding 5-0 victory by Russias team over Saudi Arabia, as Putin and Saudi Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman watched together in the stadium. The tournament has brought hundreds of thousands of soccer fans to the country and an unrivaled level of international media attention. But seven and a half years later, what does it signify for Russias relationships with the Western world? If anything, the country has found itself more isolated than it has been in decades after a series of actions and allegations have shaken up international politics in recent years. These include the annexation of Crimea, suspected interference in U.S. and European elections, the poisoning of a former spy in England for which Russia has been accused, and military intervention in Syria. And questions remain about the role that corruption played in its successful World Cup bid, though they are unlikely to ever yield clear answers: the computers used by Russias bid campaign were destroyed before investigators could examine them. [Vodka, pine nuts and politics: World Cup fans meet Russians on the worlds longest train line] Still, global political observers note, the World Cup represents a triumph for Putin on the worlds stage. Putin needed the World Cup mainly for domestic purposes, and I think it will serve him well in that sense, Moscow-based political analyst Dmitry Oreshkin told the Associated Press. The World Cup takes his approval rating up, because most people like watching football. Albeit a short-lived one, it will nonetheless be a distraction from the post-Soviet reality. Though the country has been hemmed in by Western sanctions which reportedly added some complications to the financing of its stadium construction the magnetic pull of the World Cup has provided an opportunity for the country to demonstrate, accurately or not, that the sanctions have not had their intended effect. For Putin, hosting the World Cup speaks to the failure of sanctions and the failure of Western efforts to isolate him, professor Sergei Medvedev of Moscows Higher School of Economics told Reuters. Despite all that, [his mind-set is] we still have Crimea, we are pursuing our agenda, and yet look everyone has come to the World Cup. Perhaps there were hints of the struggles that now dominate geopolitical discussions about Russia during that 2010 news conference. Putin denounced the allegations of corruption around FIFAs bidding process that were starting to show up in the media, appearing to deny that he had even heard of them at first [I havent heard] any accusations against Russia or even hints, for that matter, he said before later denouncing them. Digging up incriminating material and making corruption allegations is quite an unsavory thing to do, you know, he said, according to Russias transcript of the event. All the more so since all the allegations made here were groundless, to the best of my knowledge, and they had been recognized as such previously. As a result, this can only be qualified as an attempt to pressure FIFA officials. Thats unacceptable, I think. As simple as that. And then, later on, it was all leaked to the world media. What would you call that kind of thing? Id describe that as dishonest competition. Some reporters had lobbed obsequious questions in his direction, including one who asked about why he had not come to Zurich, where FIFA is headquartered, to lobby it like the leaders of the six other countries with bids had done. You are the one prime minister that stayed away, the reporter said. So would it be fair to say that you are the cleverest prime minister in the world by staying away and winning the contest from so many thousands of miles away? Im glad I insisted on giving you the floor, Putin replied. Thank you. Its very nice to hear this. As the World Cup drew closer this year, Russian officials have gone on the offensive. The stronger the anti-Russian campaign ahead of the World Cup is, the more people will be genuinely amazed when they see there is no barbed wire at the stadiums, Foreign Ministry spokeswoman Maria Zakharova said last month. If this is isolation, then we are enjoying it, a senior Russian government official told Reuters. On Thursday, government spokesman Dmitry Peskov said that criticisms of the countrys politics have no relation to the World Cup. Today the soccer dimension is the most important one, he said, according to the AP. But politics continue to lurk in the backdrop of the tournament, always threatening to enter the fore. Putins time with Crown Prince Mohammed drew more scrutiny to the global oil production agreement that both countries are leading, amid rising global prices. The Kremlins guest list is made up of a large helping of central Asian autocrats and the heads of the breakaway republics Abkhazia and South Ossetia, along with a smattering of foreign leaders from Africa and South America, the Guardian noted. British leadership has retaliated for the spy poisoning episode, in which Russia has strenuously denied any involvement, by preventing its ministers from attending the World Cup. British LGBT activist Peter Tatchell was briefly detained in Moscow on Thursday after he had held up a banner critical of Putin outside the Kremlin: Putin fails to act against Chechnya torture of gay people, it read. Chechen leader Ramzan Kadyrov, whose treatment of gays drew attention after allegations emerged in the Russian newspaper Novaya Gazeta about a brutal anti-gay campaign led by police, also caused a row after Egyptian soccer star Mo Salah posed for pictures with him. And racism, a persistent scourge in soccer stadiums around the world, remains such a prominent concern in Russia that, for the first time, FIFA gave referees the ability to interrupt or even call off a game if racist chants or slurs emerge from the crowd. [Can Russia, with its history of racist attacks and hooligans, put on a World Cup welcome?] The head of the committee on women, family and children for the State Duma, Russias lower house of Parliament, gave an interview to a Moscow radio station this week in which she seemed to criticize mixed-race children as she urged Russian women to avoid sleeping with foreigners during the World Cup. Their children will suffer for it. Theyve suffered in the past, since the Soviet period, said the lawmaker, Tamara Pletnyova, according to the Guardian. The paper she was likely referring to mixed-race children born as a result of the Moscow Olympics in 1980. Its good if theyre one race, but if theyre of a different race, then its worse. We should bear our own children. Perhaps things could turn around. Putin had ended his talk in 2010 on a positive note, hoping that the experience of so many people visiting Russia could win hearts and minds. You know, a great many cliches survive since the Cold War. They roam Europe as so many flies, buzzing above ones head to frighten people, he said. Things are really quite different. Come and see how we are preparing for the World Cup, and come to see its games. You will get firsthand knowledge of Russia, visit its cities, talk to people and understand this country better. Read more: A GOP congressman retweeted a self-described Nazi sympathizer. His party did not rebuke him.
